Month List

Director's Message

What a whirlwind of a quarter! This time of year is filled with such color and vibrancy downtown, and it's always amazing to see the crowds of people enjoying all of the different businesses and amenities.

We've had some amazing successes just in the past quarter. Much of the work in the Kelly Poling Arts District has been completed with hanging lights and other small amenities on the way. You may have noticed the test strand already up; look for more to come in the upcoming months! We look forward to the continued revitalization of this corridor of Locust Street.

We received word that we are semi-finalists for 4 state Main Street awards, which will be announced at the annual Main Street conference on July 25th. Those four categories are: Best Large-Scale Project: Purchase and Renovation of 504 Washington St.; Heritage Travel Award: Sliced Bread Day; Outstanding Community Education Campaign: Historic Preservation; and Volunteer of the Year: Kelly Poling. We are excited to honor these four nominees!

The newest mural was completed and plans for the 2020 mural are already underway. Also, be on the lookout for a facade renovation coming to the Edward Jones building in the next few weeks that will breathe new life into this beautiful building.

As always, support local business and shop downtown. There's a lot downtown has to offer, so come out and explore!

New Business Spotlight- The Charmed Nook

by Ben White, Director 28. August 2019 08:39

Main Street wishes to welcome Wendy Wilson owner of The Charmed Nook as a new business to downtown.  The Charmed Nook opened in April 2019.
Wendy and husband Michael Wilson live in Chillicothe.  Wendy has 2 children and 3 grandchildren.  She loves dogs and has two.  She worked at Hy-vee for 25 years.  They moved to Chillicothe in 2013.
Wendy's love and hobby of painting signs and creating flower arrangements grew in the last few years, and she began getting requests for custom orders.  Her business, Me & My Brush was formed and soon it was taking over her garage.  After about two years working from home, she  began looking for a space to expand.
Her niece Kristy Lauhoff found her the perfect building at 611 Locust St. Wendy decided she wanted to create a store where other talented people could showcase and sell their own goods.  She changed the name from Me & My Brush to The Charmed Nook and began looking for vendors that could fill the store.  She also had the upstairs apartment renovated, bringing the apartment entry from the back ally to the front of the building.  The Charmed Nook received the facade renovation and upstairs renovation grants from Main Street.  They put in new store front windows and doors, which look great.  The upstairs apartment is gorgeous and provides a great place to rent, with great views of downtown.
The store now houses 27 vendors, who offer a variety of items ranging from hand painted signs, home decor, primitives, pet treats and supplies, floral arrangements, jewelry, quilts, gifts and more.  A lot of the vendors take custom orders, including Wendy herself, who loves creating custom gift baskets.  Wendy will even deliver for free inside city limits.  Wendy and her husband Mike reside in Chillicothe.  Wendy has one employee, Laura Davenport, who also creates custom hand painted signs, available in the store.
I asked Wendy what she wanted people to know about her and the store and Wendy stated that her goal has always been to create a welcoming environment for vendors.  She strives to give a personable experience to customers.  She loves being a part of downtown and enjoys assisting customers and working with the talented vendors that fill her store.
Her store is a fun place to shop, and gives a down home feel as soon as you walk in the door.  There is something for everyone, and the store has already received great reviews on its facebook page.   Her store hours are Monday-Friday 9-6, Saturday 9-5, closed Sundays.  You can find The Charmed Nook on Facebook
