Downtown Spotlight
This week the spotlight is on Melinda Kimmis with the Chillicothe Beauty Academy & Barbering!

What’s one thing you can’t live without at work?
Easy—Grandma Pat! Melinda’s mom, lovingly called Grandma Pat by the students, is the heart and soul of the academy. She's basically the Mary Poppins of cosmetology—whipping out whatever tool, snack, or bit of wisdom the students need at just the right time. She’s part-time supply closet, part-time therapist, and full-time MVP. Everyone needs a Grandma Pat in their life (and in their salon)!

What inspires you?
Melinda saw a need in our community for more opportunities in cosmetology education—and she stepped up. She was inspired to teach others the craft she fell in love with, and that passion still fuels her every day. Since taking over the academy, she’s helped 82 students graduate and launch their careers. Now that’s beautiful. She welcomes people from all walks of life into her academy—but no matter how they walk in, Melinda’s goal is that they leave walking tall. “Some come in with their heads down, but they leave with their heads held high.” The very first lesson? Believe in yourself.

If you could go back and give yourself advice on day one, what would it be?
“Put your best foot forward. No one will appreciate your business like you do.”That mindset has guided her through the challenges—and the wins—ever since.

What’s one thing that makes your day instantly better?
When her grandkids walk through the door! Melinda is a proud grandma of 13 and nothing lights up her day faster than a surprise visit from one of them.

Favorite Dad Joke?
“Why do you wash your clothes in Tide? Because it’s too cold ouTIDE!” Pretty clean joke right?!
