Timeless Treasures: Mural and Building Heritage Tour

Last Updated 9/12/2024

Our downtown historic buildings and murals are a significant focal point in Chillicothe. The murals and buildings are captivating to visitors and native Chillicothe individuals alike. The stories behind the buildings and murals are intriguing and showcase the rich history of Chillicothe. The retelling of the murals and the buildings that they reside on is important. For this reason, Main Street Chillicothe was privileged to partner with Livingston County Library again this year for a mural & historic building walking tour.

May is National Historic Preservation Month. In this month the nation's heritage and historic places are celebrated. Organizations across the country promote a variety of activities on the local, state, and national levels to bolster national and community pride, encourage heritage tourism, and show the social and economic benefits of historic preservation. Chillicothe’s Timeless Treasures: Mural and Building Heritage Tours were the perfect opportunity to sightsee, learn, and share about Chillicothe’s historic buildings and murals. The program consisted of two walking tours. The first tour covering the Courthouse District on Thursday, May 23, 2024. The second tour covered the Commercial District on Thursday, May 30, 2024. Kirsten Mouton, with the library, tells the history of the buildings within each tour, while Tomie Walker, with Main Street Chillicothe, provides details on each mural.

Main Street Chillicothe and the Livingston County Library take great pride in our downtown buildings and murals. Remembering and retelling the stories of these buildings and murals help us foster understanding and appreciation for the treasures we still have as well as the ones that are lost. These stories must remain in our conversations so that we may be good stewards and protectors for our historic heritage. Be on the lookout for more educational and entertaining programs in the future. Downtown is for everyone, so we hope you always feel welcome to join us.

If you want to learn more about our buildings and murals or have missed the tours, visit  https://chillicothedowntownhistorictour.weebly.com/ and experience the tour online.
