Then and Now #16 - The New York Store

Last Updated 7/31/2025Posted in Then and Now

πŸ“ The New York Store πŸ—½, once at the corner of Locust and Clay Streets, was originally constructed in 1887 πŸ—οΈ after the owners of the business, Captain Archibald McVey and his various partners 🀝, moved their business from 614 Washington Street 🏬; this was the second time the business had moved πŸ”. Architect Charles B. Clarke πŸ›οΈ designed the impressive building, along with others in town such as the 1877 city hall πŸ™οΈ. Between its founding in 1898 and 1910 πŸ“š, Maupin College πŸŽ“, teaching a variety of humanities and business-related subjects πŸ“–πŸ’Ό, operated out of the second floor πŸͺŸ. While the company was renamed in 1902 πŸ”„, the building would continue to be known as the New York Store for many years 🏷️. Around this time in the 1930s πŸ“†, the building was purchased by Judge Chris Boehner βš–οΈ, being referred to interchangeably as the New York Store and the Boehner Building during this period 🏒. In the 1930s, the building was heavily modernized πŸ› οΈ with many of its most impressive details being pared down or removed altogether ❌, though it still retained its imposing scale πŸ“. In 1986 the building was torn down 🧹 as part of a bank expansion 🏦.
