Then and Now #20 - People's Telephone Exchange Company
π The People's Telephone Exchange Building, located at 610 Webster ππ’ and built around 1908β1909 ποΈ, was, as its name suggests, originally used as the hub of Chillicothe's telephone network ππ‘ for a time. The building itself is fairly modest 𧱠but clearly well made, with brick detailing around the cornice 𧱠and stone slabs πͺ¨ above the windows πͺ. π° The history of the telephone exchange seems to have gone relatively undocumented π. Based on available information from newspapers at the time ποΈ, the first telephone exchange in Chillicothe was set up around the late 1880s or early 1890s π, with an individual by the name of M. Jarret being an early manager of the system π€π. It's not clear where in town the exchange was set up βποΈ. It is noted that the exchange is one of only a few in the country not wholly owned by the Bell Telephone Company. π Within the following decades, it seems that at least two separate telephone exchanges existed in town ππ‘. Eventually though, the "People's Telephone Exchange" won out π and subsequently constructed this building π’. By around 1919 π, the building was listed as Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. ποΈπ By the mid 20th century π°οΈ, it was no longer the telephone exchange but cycled through various beauty supply stores ππ . In the 2010s π , the building had a sign reading "Family Hair Care Clinic" π·οΈπ₯. Until recently, the building had fallen into bad condition β οΈ but a change in ownership π and recent remodeling π οΈ has brought some new life π±β¨ to this old structure.
