Then and Now #12 - Hartman's Building
πThe Hartman's Building, located at 622 Washington Street, was constructed sometime in the 1880s. ποΈ One of the first known businesses at the location was Stephens & Sipple. π§βπΌπ¨βπΌ By 1890 a men's clothing store occupied the bottom floor π with a photography studio on the second. πΈ In 1896 a grocery store operated from the first floor. π₯«π By 1897, Hartmanβs Ladies Ready-To-Wear, owned by Simon P. and Phil W. Hartman, had moved into the building. ππ By 1917 the business had expanded its offerings significantly. π In 1927 Phil Hartman sold the business to A. C. Smith and Isaac Graham upon moving to Kansas City. ποΈ Following this the Smith Department Store opened, π¬ though it only lasted until 1930. π During this time the second floor was leased to Dolph Maupin for the Mid-West Business School; π Maupin previously led Maupin College based in the New York Store. π« Clothing stores occupied the building through the 1950s, ππ Sears moved in during the 1960s and 70s, ποΈ and Fletchall Office Supply was in the building from 1975β1995. ποΈπ Edward Jones moved in right after πΌπ° and today the building is home to Horsman Law. βοΈ
